The method of mixing Wills Quills Mounting Glue Powder
This particular kind is the traditional Chinese mounting glue used for centuries for all painting scrolls etc. It is non-glutinous and will not cause any side effects to colours and papers or allow fungus growth. All measures used are from the USA standard system, and in brackets millilitres. Tablespoons are not heaped.
NECESSARY EQUIPMENT:
Tablespoon, cup, mixing bowl, boiling water, a few drops of Eucalyptus oil, empty jar for the finished glue.
METHOD OF MIXING:
Take a glass or ceramic mixing bowl and measure into it 4 x tablespoons (15ml) of the mounting glue powder. Measure into this a 1/2 cup (125ml) of cold water and mix thoroughly into a paste, making sure to eliminate all lumps with the spoon. At this stage the powder mix has an opaque, dense look. (Any lumps will show later in the finished glue and of course they will cause uneven surfaces on your work. If they are not eliminated now they would have to be sieved out before use). Add 2 x cups (250ml each) of boiling water and stir continuously until the whole mixture has become jelly like and slightly translucent. The glue is now ready to use. To be able to keep it preserved add a few drops of Eucalyptus oil, which will stop fungus etc developing in the preserving jar. This must be stirred in until it disappears completely without any residue left.
The final glue will have a medium thickness which is ideal for most applications. This can however be adjusted to the kind of thickness you personally would want to use, by adding slightly more or less powder at the initial cold water stage of mixing. Or is made thinner by simply adding water and stirring.
