The Illuminated Alphabet

The Grandes Heures of Jean Duke of Berry

The original copy is in the Bibliotheque Nationale, Paris. Commissioned in 1407 by the Duke, who already owned some of the best manuscript books in existence at that time, the books illuminated work has many similarities to other quality works. A detailed introduction outlines the story of this books creation and other information. This book has colour images from the original in near exact copy size (400x300mm). A marvel to see and study. The Farnese Hours
Introduction & commentaries by Webster Smith.
The original copy is in the Pierpont Morgan Library, New York. Completed in Rome in 1546 for Alesandro Cardinal Farnese. A book of private devotions, its illuminated content was known as the best quality miniature painting. The 26 colour miniature paintings taking a whole page each are arranged in pairs in this book, as in the original. As well as many page edge panels also having miniatures and scroll work. The devotional prayers are printed as well, plus some copies of the calligraphic work in the original hand. Retail price AUD$148.50 each. The Hours of Simon De Varie
Introduction by James H Marrow.
The original copy is in the J. Paul Getty Museum, Malibu. Dated to 1455 and commisioned for Simon De Varie the book was only recently merged into a whole work from 3 seperate parts. The miniature paintings done by Jean Fouquet are exquisitly done, and includes small pictures and other artwork of interest to illuminators. A great amount of detail is expounded in the books chapters, to give insight into each of the seperate volumes and the written subject matter of this book of hours. Retail price AUD$220.00 each.
