INSIDE SET 1, "GEMS OF CHINESE PAINTING IN THE SHANGHAI MUSEUM"
The book has a preface and additional sections by prominent Chinese Painters and Scholars, as well as the original notes on each of the one hundred paintings. The English translation from the original Chinese, is bound in a large Chinese booklet form. This is the same size as the box, and has 20 text pages, but as you can understand the size of the booklet is large, the text is quite complete and more like a complete book in its content.

The whole set was published by the museum in 1959 and was a Chinese only edition, since the Chinese Revolution however, this was re-printed with the English booklet in 1981. This is the current version we are offering.

A thick dark blue velvet covers the outside of the book, which fits comfortably in the silk brocade box. The artwork itself is done on specially selected papers and some on painters silk, each one is mounted into the book on its own page.

The 100 copies are exquisite reproductions from the original paintings. Each entry has its title and catalogue number on the facing page, these refer to the booklet entries – where there is a wealth of information on each painter, the painting and numerous other historical details.

The paintings represent the cream of the Shanghai Museum, and start at the Song Dynasty, through the Yuan, and Ming to the Ching Dynasty. So there is over a 1000 years of the best artwork in this set.

Famous Painters and their Paintings are throughout the book, and many are recognisable immediately on turning the pages.

INSIDE SET 2, "MING AND QING PAINTINGS AND CALLIGRAPHIC WORKS ON FANS"

On the 30th Anniversary of the Founding of the Shanghai Museum in 1982, this grand commemoration set was produced. The 150 exact colour copies of fans in the Shanghai Museum’s collection are faithfully reproduced in their original size.
