These pens are excellent for calligraphy work using highly stylised lettering, and of course are straight line ink ruling pens. If you have never used one before for either purpose, then they will seem to be antiquated in design and sinister to look at, but bear with us.
This item is normally found in compass sets, as an attachment to a compass for circle drawing.

But we sell them in a fixed handle - for hand use with a ruler for line drawing, or for calligraphy lettering.
AUD$25.00 each (plastic handles may vary from the photo seen here)

SOME TIPS on The Ink Ruler and Hand Drawn lines
When drawing lines, the ink ruled line width is adjustable by turning the wheel above the tip. Undo it for wider, or tighten it for a thinner line. The actual width can be measured against a millimeter rule for an exact line width.

The ruler you use must have an ink rut, to make the finished line clean. Otherwise the ink will run under the ruler as the line is drawn. This technique is done by choosing a rule that has that bevelled angle on the edge, and using it upside down so that the edge of the rule doesn't touch the page, but floats 2 or 3 mm above. This stops ink flowing from the tip of the ruling pens reservoir onto the edge of the rule and ultimately from flowing under it onto the page.

Ink Ruling pen use by Calligraphers for Lettering
A few years ago now, Jean Larcher the French calligrapher/teacher came to Australia to show us his work and lead some workshops on his latest calligraphy styles. Parts of his Ruling pen work, and his work done at these workshops is shown here.

This exiting and creative calligraphy method has stimulated many calligraphers to break from traditional styles and branch out into modern lettering, with its expressive freedom of form.

# Will's Quills wishes to thank Jean Larcher for his work shown here.
