Chinese painters using quality watercolour paint for their scroll paintings, have the option of using ground mineral powders (and adding animal glue liquid) – or dry colour chips (pre-mixed with animal glue).

Both of these methods provide excellent traditional results and as the colours are mostly mineral stone – the results last without fading. With chips the range of colours is different, as they have other shades not available from mineral sources.

The Mixing of Animal Glue & Powder.
Mineral powders in general are manufactured into different shades of say blue (azurite) with each shade having a slightly different grain size. By grinding these before use, you standardize the powders grain size.

On opening a pack of coloured mineral powder pour it into a mortar & pestle, and grind it to fine powder – restoring it to the pack for later use.

To prepare powders for painting they need a binding glue, so that the powders adhere to the paper after drying. Using a painting brush and a little glue, mix some powder into it. The strength of glue can be thicker than you would use for painting as you add water to gain the correct watercolour paint for your painting. i.e add more water for a thin wash & less for normal colours, etc.

Powders can be mixed ready for use and left to dry. Then reconstituted later by adding a little water, then it is ready for use. An ideal way of pre-mixing is to use a chinese stacking palette (5 palettes that stack on each other) and allowing the glue paint to dry, and storing the colour in this form, ready for later painting use.

Chinese Traditional ceramic Paint Pots - in a brocade box:

Another way to get and use Chinese traditional colours for painting, is to buy the set of 12x ceramic paint pots, in a brocade silk box.

There is enough paint in the pots to last for many, many paintings. 10x of the supplied colours are hard pans of paint, with 2x that are the stone/mineral pigment colours, in powder form.

These are the colours; Rouge Red, Chinese White, Lok Yellow, Sky Blue, Chinese Red, Sunrise Red, Vermilion, Indigo, Deep Red, Burnt Sienna.
Plus the mineral powder packs; Azurite (Blue) No.2, Melachite (green) No.2. These need you to add the glue (included in the set), to bind the powders when painting.
