TRADITIONAL CHINESE SCROLL MOUNTING OF CHINESE PAINTINGS OR CALLIGRAPHY

We most likely need to see the artwork/s, to be able to quote price rates before any work is started. Sometimes the piece is unsuitable for Traditional Chinese mounting if non-Chinese watercolour methods are used to paint the work. Please describe by email any job you might like mounted, and we will answer any queries, before you forward the piece/s to us. A deposit of 50% of the quoted price will apply, before the work is done. These services are done through Wills Quills using the following specifications:

1. TRADITIONAL CHINESE SCROLL MOUNTING
A scroll can be made up of the embossed silk shade of your choice, see our samples below, or you can trust the experience of our mounting specialist, to choose the correct shade for the kind of colours used in your painting/calligraphy. Our samples of plain and embossed paper backed silks are shown below, or by a visit to the shop. The finished scroll has the wooden dowel at the top and bottom, and the specially bound hanging cord at the top end.

In Chinese traditions there is a standard size for a pair of scrolls, these are normally found in the entrance of houses. For the matched pair mounting the size is 35cm wide.

As the width of the painting/calligraphy is the deciding factor in our price/costing, (the finished height of the scroll is always a set percentage of the width), for the price rates, we need to assess the work before accurately quoting the cost.

2. TRADITIONAL MOUNTING for FRAMING
This also uses an plain or embossed silk border, (you can choose your own silk colours or the judgement of our specialist), we use an adjustable pricing method according to the size of the picture. There are no end wooden dowels or hanging cords on this mounting, just flat work. For the price rates, we need to assess the work before accurately quoting the cost.

3. TRADITIONAL RICE PAPER BACKING ONLY
This adds strength to the original watercolour painted piece, and is a single rice paper thickness, making it suitable for wood frame mounting or making into a scroll. No silk mounting is involved in this work. For the price rates, we need to assess the work before accurately quoting the cost.

SPECIAL NOTE: If non-Chinese watercolour methods are used to paint the work, the piece is unsuitable for Chinese Machine Scroll mounting.

Your artwork can be done on eastern painting paper or eastern painting silk (paper backed). Please measure the artwork and advise us by email about any job you might like mounted, and we will answer any queries, before you forward the piece/s to us. A deposit of 50%, or the whole amount of the quoted price will apply, before the work is done. These services are done through Wills Quills using the following specifications:

Please select your artwork size based on the following table marked sizes. I.E if your artwork measures 69 x 40cm, then the grouping would be inside the 69 x 45cm size. You would then email us with your size and we will advise you of the cost, according to the size group and type of medium - paper or silk.

REPAIR AND CONSERVATION OF CHINESE / JAPANESE SCROLLS AND ARTWORK

We also offer a conservation and repair service for Chinese/Japanese scroll artwork. Regardless of age or condition, scrolls and their artwork can be repaired, restoring them to as new condition in most cases.

The costs can be expensive for this kind of work as a great deal of time and labour is needed to complete the work. Pricing for these items is therefore quoted for each particular job. The painting work itself can be re-done by artists experienced in this kind of work. Examples of unrepaired scrolls and artwork, as well as completely repaired scrolls and artwork follows;
